XML as a Source for Publishable Content

Thomas Publishing Company
Thomas Food industry Register Project

XML was used both as a database conversion tool and as an input file for the 2000 Thomas Food Industry Register. ATLIS mapped a pre-existing Clipper database to a new restructured MS SQL database using XML as the transitional mechanism. Clipper tables were output to XML and subsequently imported into MS-SQL using SQL scripts.

A feature of the new system was the ability to output XML "on the fly" as validated by a system DTD. XML could thus be used for a variety of deliverables including questionnaires, proofs, web pages and ultimately the published 2,160 page directory. XML was used as the source file for the composition engine that produced consistent, well-structured pages in a short period of time. A PDF sample is available in our samples section.

ATLIS now uses this approach for much of its directory production with successful implementations for AM Best and Leadership Directories.ACS Directory of Graduate Research.
