Document Assembly
Document assembly describes a technique that assembles large groups of data elements into cohesive customized documents. This repository of elements can be text, graphics or formatted files but is usually fragments of 'chunks' of previously composed documents. The systematic assembly system contains a template (or templates), an organized repository of elements, variable data and a control file for driving the patterns of assembly.
Dynamic document assembly has become an indispensable part of on-demand printing systems and is derivative of many CRM (Customer Relationship Management) applications. Many digital printing companies now build in this capability and have incorporated the technology as part of their job flow.
Targeted Assembly
The value of this technology is found in the amount of control that industries now have in controlling and targeting their message. A simple example would be a clothing catalogue that has been customized to a specific market. Since Florida residents are not likely to purchase down ski jackets, the document assembly system would check a customer's zip code and include only warm weather clothing for Florida residents. Conversely, publishers could exclude warm weather clothing for residents of Minnesota. While this example illustrates the capabilities, different industries will use the assembly techniques very differently and for different purposes.
